Xàbia – Coll de Rates
1. Briefing
In the first half of the route, you’ll ride along the coast, passing through the stunning seaside of Xàbia. The first gentle climb to Cap de La Nau begins at km 15. At km 20, the real challenge starts with Puig de la Llorença, a climb featured in La Vuelta, where Chris Froome (2017) and Tom Dumoulin (2015) claimed victories🥇🏆.
Following a rapid descent, you’ll reach Moraira, continuing along the coastal roads to arrive at Calp at km 60 and Altea by km 70. After crossing Altea, the route begins to gradually rise, leading to the climb of Coll de Rates, the second and final major ascent of the day, starting after Callosa d’En Sarrià.
2. CLimbs
A brief but challenging 3 km climb that will test your endurance. The steepest gradients of 20% 💥 are found at the start and near the end of the climb. The road is wide and in excellent condition, but since it’s a residential area, anticipate some traffic in the summer months.
A popular climb in the region, this longer route covers 18 km with an average gradient of 3%. You’ll start ascending after passing the village of Callosa d’en Sarrià.
3. Traffic
The initial 65 km along the coast may present some traffic challenges. Notably, the stretch of national road between Calp and Altea (km 55 to 60) can be particularly busy and hazardous🚩🚩, with no alternative route available.
Traffic should ease after crossing Callosa d’en Sarrià.
