Calp – Rates
1. Briefing
You’ll hit the first short climb in the early kilometres, which will take you up to the town of Benissa. You’ll then head inland, hitting some short climbs along the way before attacking the challenge of the circuit; Port de Bèrnia. Long and easy, with gorgeous views and very little traffic (one of our favourite climbs🚴🏽♂️💛). Once at the summit, it’s time for a nice long descent to the village of Xaló.
The second climb comes right after Alcalalí. Here you’ll tackle one of the most well-known climbs of the region; Coll de Rates. You can expect a perfect road, excellent views, and a true cycling atmosphere.
The way back to Calp is easy, with only a few short climbs along the way.
2. CLimbs
A 15 km stretch of a meandering rural road, consisting mainly of easy first kilometres but with some steep bits that reach up to 9% gradient. You can expect beautiful views of Bèrnia, with limited traffic. The biggest challenge comes in the last stretch, where you’ll come across leg-zapping bits that hit gradients up to 17%.
One of the most popular climbs of the region. A 6 km ascent with an average that doesn’t rise above 6%. This is the shorter version of the climb. The longer starts on the opposite side of the mountain, in the village of Callosa d’en Sarrià.
3. Traffic
You’ll come across very little traffic during the two climbs, especially in Port de Bèrnia. Expect heavy traffic the last 5 kilometres as you ride along the national road.
4. Road Quality
Road quality is very good throughout the whole track.
